Coconut Oil Toothpaste

Jump to Recipe

Coconut oil is not only something that I eat everyday but also something I use on my body. One of those things that I use it in is my homemade toothpaste.

I haven’t used store toothpaste in over a year. I did use one from a health store but have found my teeth just feel cleaner when I make my homemade version.

It is very simple to make and only has four ingredients: Coconut oil, baking soda, Real Salt(or Himalayan), and clove powder. You can also add some sweetness with erythritol or xylitol if you don’t like the taste of the salt and baking soda.

Budget Friendly

So why would you want to make toothpaste when you can buy natural toothpaste from your health store or online? As with many things in my life I would say the number one reason I personally make my own toothpaste is to save money.

Many natural toothpastes will cost anywhere from $4 to $10. And the cheaper ones were not giving me the same “clean” feeling as I mentioned a few paragraphs above.

And all the ingredients in my toothpaste are ones that are commonly in your pantry, minus the erythritol/xylitol. But you can easily make it without and it’s perfectly fine. This is what I do all the time. It’s really just getting past the salty taste.

Fluoride

Unlike what the government would tell you, fluoride is not necessary for our teeth health or overall health in general. And for anyone who has thyroid issues like myself it is very important to avoid this neurotoxin. The fluoride that is supplied in our water is not even natural anyway it is man-made. And of course if you try to lead any kind of healthy lifestyle you know it’s best to avoid synthetic. So why should fluoride be the exception?

But if you don’t believe just check out some of these resources: Fluoride and Your Thyroid and History of Fluoride. The first is from “Izabella Wentz” a well known thyroid pharmacist who goes into more detail over why you would not want to expose yourself to Fluoride. Especially if you have thyroid disorders. And the other link is from “WAPF” it tells the history of water fluoridation and how there was a fight to get it added to our water supply.

But definitely a good couple of articles that enlighten and expose how we do not need Fluoride in our water or our dental care products.

Toxic Load

Continuing from our topic above on fluoride it is very important nowadays especially to reduce what toxins we bring into our body. This is not only important through what we eat but also through our skincare and also dental care products.

The more heavier toxic load in the body the more susceptible we are to diseases. So everything I use on my body is made from natural ingredients that nourish instead of coursing harm.

Simple and Natural Ingredients

But if you are looking for more reasons why this toothpaste is helpful and good for your mouth, let’s take a more in depth look at the ingredients.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is antimicrobial and antifungal due to its MCT content. These properties come from coconut oils medium chain triglycerides in particular “Lauric Acid.”

Lauric acid makes up about 50% of the MCTs in coconut oil

Baking Soda

Baking soda is something I use not only in Baking but also around the house for cleaning but also for my body. It is good at fighting fungus and mold.

Real Salt

Salts function is for killing when it comes to living things, this is why it is good in fermenting. It helps kill the bad bacteria.

Clove Powder

Cloves have for many years been used to help aleave tooth pain because of its antibacterial compounds. I also just like that it helps freshen the breathe.

Coconut Oil Toothpaste

4 tablespoons coconut oil

2 Tbsps Baking Soda (may need to add more in summer, you want it to look more like a paste than soup)

2 Tbsp Real salt or Ground Himalayan

1 tablespoon xylitol powder or Erythritol powder (optional) If you don’t have ground you can make your own by grinding granulated in a coffee grinder

1tsp Clove Powder

4oz glass jar

1. Combine all ingredients and mix till all is combined and no lumps are left.

2. Put the toothpaste in the 4oz jar.

3. To use, put your brush in the paste and brush as usual. Make one for each person in your household so your not sharing germs.

4. Also if you are short on ingredients you can halve the recipe. The container in the picture I think is more 2oz to 3oz, I reused a jar that had Honey in it.

5. Here’s to happy healthy smiles!

Notes

If your coconut oil is too hard you can warm it in a saucepan and then mix it with your other ingredients. Adjust salt and baking soda if you need to get a paste consistency.
