About me

Hi, I’m Ruth

Welcome to Vintage Kiwi. “Vintage” for all things old whether it be clothing, houses, old machinery and of course traditional ways of making food. The “Kiwi” is a nod to my New Zealand roots, in New Zealand we call one another “kiwis” after our beloved flightless bird “the kiwi”.

But let me introduce myself:

I am a wife, a mother, a lover of all things healthy and believer in eating the food that God has provided for us.

Food that is whole and unprocessed. Whole meaning not from a box with ingredients you can’t even pronounce, but instead food that is from nature.

Traditional and Whole is Best

Traditional Foods

Whole foods are the best foods because they are foods that our ancestors have used for centuries. Which is why all the recipes you will find on this blog are made using all natural and whole ingredients.

I originally geared my site towards low carb and gluten free recipes(look down below for how I eat now). I learned to make food in this way because of being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 2021. It gave me the motivation to bake without gluten.

For your information Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease which comes out of hypothyroidism. To quote mayo clinic: “An autoimmune disorder is an illness caused by the immune system attacking healthy tissues. In Hashimoto’s disease, immune-system cells lead to the death of the thyroid’s hormone-producing cells. The disease usually results in a decline in hormone production (hypothyroidism).”

Since this diagnosis I decided to cut out all gluten (at my doctors request) and most added sugar. And it wasn’t to long after doing this, that I lost all my pregnancy weight with my first child, and went back to my pre-pregnancy weight after my second child.

Not only did I lose weight, but I felt like I had more energy. Energy to keep up with my toddler. And that’s when I knew I could not go back to how I was eating before.

So I started learning to cook in a better way, creating meals that would taste good but also not hurt the body.

Anyone who has Hashimoto’s, or any other allergy that prevents you from eating certain foods, I have made these recipes for you as much as for my family and myself.

The food that we eat should be Nourishing but also Enjoyable. Come and join me in exploring food in a new way that will make us look and feel great inside and out.

*Update

As of November 2023 I am no longer eating low carb or gluten free. Though any recipes that I have created will still remain on the site for use.

Now I am eating an ayurvedic diet. I believe this diet lines up more with my beliefs in unlocking our past in eating a traditional diet. It is also inline with how I ate a few years ago, which was mostly WAPF.

For more info on Ayurveda check out these two posts on my journey into Ayurveda: Discovering Ayurveda, Finding Balance through Ayurveda. There will be a lot more to come as well!
