A Traditional Fat

Slowcooker rendered lard is very simple to make. And is an essential traditional fat to have around in your pantry. You will have heard that saturated fats are bad for you but this is all lies. According to this chart on WAPF it’s actually vegetarian fats that have the highest saturated fat. In particular coconut and palm oil. Animal fats are actually a mix of fats.

I do want to point out also that eventhough coconut and palm oil are high in saturated fat it does not mean that they are bad for you. Many island cultures have thrived on these fats for generations. So consuming palm and coconut oil and animal fats is very good for you and great for a low carb diet.

The Bad Fats

The oils you should actually avoid are the ones the health organizations have told us for years to consume. They are hydrogenated vegetable oils that are created in a factory. And these same people say we must consume these oils because they are in fact healthier than what nature has provided for us for hundreds of years.

If you believe something that was created in a factory is healthier than what you can find in nature go ahead and keep consuming those nasty oils. Also stay away from keto because it is the wrong lifestyle for you.

Anyway getting back to our post. Slowcooker rendered lard. Rendering the lard is simple it’s just a little messy to begin with if you have to cut it and grind it yourself. But the end product is a cheap cooking fat that is good for you and a great fat for any low carb keto diet.

Inexpensive Healthy Fat

Lard is one of those products you should definitely seek out from the local farmers in your area. I get mine unrendered for $3 a pound. And get a 3 to 4 pound package at a time. Rendered I get about a quart and half. Sometimes two quarts. The lard sold in stores however is closer to $12 and is only 12ozs.

I don’t know about you but I would rather spend $10 to $15 on unrendered pork fat and render it myself than spend around the same price for less lard. It definitely takes longer to do it yourself but it is much more better for your money. And when your on a budget you will find the cheapest thing is nearly always to do it yourself. But don’t worry rendering this lard in the slowcooker is a cinch. It will do most of the hard work for you.

And as a bonus once you have rendered your lard you will get a yummy snack in the form of cracklings. My husband loves to add hot sauce and salt to his cracklings. You could also mix them into a low carb vegetable dish as well. Enjoy your fats!
